Why STEM Outreach Matters: My Journey into Engineering
In 2016, I was a Year 10 student attending a STEM Day at the Lockheed Martin Ampthill site. It was an outreach event designed for STEM students from Bedfordshire schools, and little did I know it would spark my interest in engineering and shape my career aspirations in such a profound way.
Fast forward to today—I’ve come full circle. I’m no longer a visitor or student at Ampthill; I’m part of the team, having joined the Manufacturing Graduate Programme. My journey from curious student to Lockheed Martin graduate highlights just how powerful outreach can be in inspiring future innovators.
A Chain of Outreach Experiences
That STEM Day was only the start of my journey. In Year 11, I returned to Ampthill for a week-long work experience placement in the iLab. It was an incredible experience—I got to work with engineering graduates and explore cutting-edge technologies like VR headsets and robotics programming. It was during that week that my passion for innovation and problem-solving truly took hold.
The following summer, when I was in Year 12, the outreach team visited my school for careers talk. They showcased the range of opportunities at Lockheed Martin, including the Manufacturing Graduate Programme. That session left a lasting impression and introduced me to the programme I’m now proud to be a part of.

Full Circle
Now, I’ve joined the same outreach team that once helped guide me towards engineering. It’s a surreal and rewarding experience to be on the other side, helping inspire students just as I once was. Reflecting on my journey, I feel proud to work alongside the people who once inspired me. And being part of the Outreach Team now gives me the chance to share my story with students who might one day follow the same path I did.

STEM outreach played a crucial role in shaping my future, and I believe it can do the same for so many others. By creating opportunities and offering real-world insights, outreach doesn’t just open doors—it helps shape futures. I’m grateful for the opportunities I had, and I’m even more excited to now be opening those same doors for others.
